Did He Just Spit On That Guy?
22 They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
24 He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Mark 8:22-25 NIV
This blind man from Bethsaida begged for Jesus to touch him. People who Jesus touched were healed. I am sure his reputation spread like wildfire. Whenever people heard that Jesus was in town they would want to just "touch" Him.
Jesus healed many people in different ways. Some were healed just by touching the hem of His clothing, others were healed when He touched them, Lazarus was raised from the dead by Jesus telling him to rise up! Jesus spit on his eyes and then put His hands on him. GROSS! He SPIT on him! Jesus then asked him if the man saw anything. He could see but his vision was blurry. Jesus then placed His hands on the man's eyes and he could then see clearly.
This man's healing didn't come all at once. This was Jesus, the Son of God, praying for him and he still wasn't healed completely the first time. I wonder why his healing came in stages? I don't know, I certainly do not know why Jesus used spit! Maybe just so that we could reference it in the Bible so when our healing doesn't come all at once to still believe and pray? Maybe.
I would also like to note that Jesus didn't do every healing the same way every time. Some healings happened when he took mud and placed on their eyes, some where healed just by a prayer or a touch and with this guy Jesus used some spit or saliva. Don't think that just because someone is healed in a certain fashion that it has to happen just like that everytime! You cannot place God in a box, He is way bigger than that!
Do not give up on your healing. Keep praying and seeking Jesus. Do not get in a rut of thinking that anything of Jesus happens a certain way everytime. Jesus turned the water into wine at the wedding, He provided to pay taxes by having a gold coin in a fish's mouth! Jesus calmed the storm by a command. Jesus took a boat ride across great bodies of water and another time He walked on the water! Jesus can minister in a variety of ways. Please do not be offended when He spits on you, it just might be an avenue of healing for you!
